Saw the mirrors bouncing around on smooth pavement. Took a look today and the pic is what greeted me. That is indeed a mess of washers meant to act as spacers and a way-too-small nut to cap it all off.
Oh well, let’s see how the other side is held on. Maybe I can figure out what I need to-
Oh....well there’s the spacer but....where’s the rest?!?!
I’m glad I didn’t pay his asking price now. This thing needs a proper bit of maintenance. And the guy went on and on about how good it was because it was owned by the owner of a triumph dealership in Chicago and stuff like that
UPDATE:
2$ at Ace hardware later and it has been properly fixed. Really wasn't that hard....

Someone once told me
“Never buy a house from a builder. Never buy a car from a mechanic”

For real, now that I’ve been a mechanic I laugh when I see “mechanic owned” in a CL ad. That just means you fixed the absolute bare minimum to keep the car driveable and let everything else go until the last possible second. I do it too though, you never want to work on your own car anymore after a year or so of professional wrenching, my brakes have been low/making noise for over a year now but I know there's still 1mm or so of pad left and I need new rotors anyways so I'm putting it off until they grind.

“contractor grade” means “as cheaply made as humanly possible.”

He replaced the battery and went on and on about how the bike is a “collector’s item” since they discontinued the trophy.....But it’s a 40k mile example that has been down a few times because it gets ridden. I priced it like a used Kawasaki Concours/Yamaha FJR/Honda VFR and.....yeah that’s what it is. But the engine sounds healthy and it holds idle like a champ and goes up and down the rev range at speed with ease.
So I guess he had priorities, at least.

I once test drove a Mini that was “owned by the service manager’s wife” and got the same line about maintenance . Then I opened the sunroof and it jammed. Then the check engine light came on. The salesman didn’t talk much after that. Did not buy the car.

Yeah I would never buy a car with a line like that. Bikes, sure, since they’re just a lot simpler. But oh man, imagine a Bentley “Owned by the service manager”. Dear christ I can’t imagine the workarounds and unlabeled wiring you would find.

There's a Triumph dealer within walking distance of my house in Chicagoland. I wonder if one of the brothers owned it.
